(239) 590-7196The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics provides a more intensive exposure to the technical aspects of the discipline and provides opportunities for students to develop general analytical and problem-solving skills and gain specific, in-depth knowledge in certain areas of mathematics. Students will be prepared for graduate study in mathematics, science, or engineering.
Program Progression and Additional Graduation Requirements
- Attend an orientation session.
- Sign an Advising Agreement document.
In addition to the program requirements, students must:
- Complete a minimum of 120 credits.
- Complete a minimum of 42 of the 120 credits at the upper division (3000-4999 level).
- Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all coursework attempted at FGCU.
- Satisfy the College-Level Skills and foreign language entrance requirements.
- Satisfy the Service-Learning requirement.
- Satisfy the Civic Literacy requirement.
- Satisfy the residency requirement: 30 of the last 60 credits must be completed at FGCU.
- Complete the summer course enrollment requirement.
- Submit an Application for Graduation by the deadline listed in the FGCU Academic Calendar.

Combined Program
Qualified students will take up to 9 credits of graduate-level (5000-6999) coursework during their junior or senior year. During their final semester for the baccalaureate degree, students can apply to the M.S. in Applied Mathematics program and, if admitted, can complete the remaining 21 credits of graduate coursework for the master’s degree with one additional year of study. This program will allow students to move more efficiently through two degrees and thereby jump-start professional development. Graduates from this program will be well prepared to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a related field; to seek a teaching position at the post-secondary level; or to pursue any number of careers that require problem solving, critical thinking, or research skills.
Combined Program Admission Requirements
- Junior standing or higher
- Overall GPA of at least 3.2
- Major GPA of at least 3.4
- A grade of B or better in MAP 2302 Differential Equations, MAS 3105 Linear Algebra, and MHF 2191 Mathematical Foundations
- Transfer students must have completed a minimum of one semester (15 credits) at FGCU with an earned FGCU GPA of 3.2 or higher
- Two letters of recommendation supporting the student's entrance into the combined program that address the student's readiness to succeed in mathematics coursework at the graduate level
Candidates for the combined program may apply as early as their junior year by submitting application materials to the M.S. in Applied Mathematics Graduate Program Coordinator. A committee comprised of three Mathematics M.S. faculty (which includes the Graduate Program Coordinator) will review the applications, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will communicate the committee's decision to each applicant.
Combined Program Progression and Additional Graduation Requirements
Students accepted into the combined program are required to meet with the program coordinator (in person or virtual) each semester within the first 6 weeks of the term to review their progress, develop a plan and receive approval to register for 1-2 specific graduate course the following semester. Students will remain classified as undergraduate students until their bachelor's degree is awarded and must apply for the M.S. in Applied Mathematics Program during the semester prior to graduating from the B.S. in Mathematics Program. Students must meet all requirements for admission into the M.S. Applied Mathematics program, including minimum grade requirements for the graduate credits completed while at the undergraduate level. Once admitted into the M.S. Applied Mathematics program, students will complete an additional 21 graduate credits to satisfy the M.S. in Applied Mathematics requirements as outlined in the program catalog.
- The B.S. in Mathematics Program is 120 credits
- The M.S. in Applied Mathematics Program is 30 credits
- Up to 9 credits will be double counted for the B.S. and M.S. programs. These credits will apply toward the undergraduate degree as free electives. Students will satisfy all other requirements for the B.S. in Mathematics program, including required courses, restricted electives, additional electives, and all university requirements
- For a student that has earned 9 graduate credits towards their bachelor's degree, the total number of credit hours required for the combined program will be 141
- Once admitted into the combined program, students must complete at least six (6) graduate credits from the courses listed below and earn a grade of B or higher in each course:
The remaining credits may be selected, in consultation with the Graduate Program Coordinator, from the list above or from any restricted elective graduate course in the M.S. in Applied Mathematics curriculum with a prefix of MAA, MAD, MAE, MAP, MAS, MAT (except MAT 6907 Directed Individual Study), MHF, MTG, or STA. Students must earn a grade of B- or higher in a restricted elective.
