The curriculum, developed by academic and industry leaders, delivers the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary for graduates to build successful careers in the hospitality and tourism industry through an applied, hands-on curriculum that includes two 500-hour internship experiences. Graduates will understand the key strategies executed by hospitality and tourism employers to deliver value to stakeholders, including employees, guests, investors, and society. Hospitality & Tourism Mgmt graduates pursue careers in myriad segments of the industry, including, but not limited to, hotels and resorts; meetings, conferences, and special events; commercial and non-commercial food service operations; destination marketing organizations; convention centers, arenas, and event venues; private clubs; and theme parks.
Students majoring in Hospitality & Tourism Mgmt (B.S.) may not pursue the Resort and Hospitality Administration (B.S.) as Dual Major / Dual Degree or Second Baccalaureate degree.
Program Progression and Additional Graduation Requirements
For timely degree completion, FTIC (First Time in College) students are expected to complete 60 credit hours with at least a 2.7 GPA, which should include the four common prerequisite courses (HFT 1000 Intro to Hospitality/Tourism, MAC 1105 College Algebra, CGS 1100 Computer Software & Technology, and ECO 2013 Principles of Macroeconomics);HFT 2750 Intro to the Event Industry;FSS 2221C Techniques of Food Production; and HFT 3404 Resort & Hosp Financial Acct, each with a C or better, within their first four semesters, excluding summer semesters. FTIC students are also strongly encouraged to complete the initial HFT 3945 Introductory Hosp Internship experience prior to their fifth semester.
For timely degree completion, transfer students are expected to complete the above requirements prior to their third semester following admission, excluding summer semesters, and the initial HFT 3945 Introductory Hosp Internship experience prior to their fourth semester.
In addition to the program requirements, students must:
- Complete HFT 1000 Intro to Hospitality/Tourism and 30 credits of coursework prior to enrolling in the required internship courses.
- Successfully complete the HFT 3945 Introductory Hosp Internship and HFT 4945 Internship Experience courses, which each require a minimum of 500 hours of industry experience with an employer. Internship sites must be approved in advance by the internship coordinator and documented. Students are strongly encouraged to focus their internship within their area of emphasis.
- Complete a minimum of 120 credits.
- Complete a minimum of 48 of the 120 credits at the upper division (3000-4999 level).
- Complete the last 30 credits of required courses at FGCU.
- Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all coursework attempted at FGCU.
- Satisfy the College-Level Skills and foreign language entrance requirements.
- Satisfy the Service-Learning requirement.
- Satisfy the Civic Literacy requirement.
- Complete the summer course enrollment requirement.
- Submit an Application for Graduation by the deadline listed in the FGCU Academic Calendar.
