TSL 3080 - Foundations of ESOL (3 Credits )
Introduces foundational concepts in applied linguistics to support English language learners in K–12 classrooms. Topics include language acquisition, grammar, mechanics, instructional legislation, and bilingual education policy. This survey course provides an overview of the Florida Teacher Standards for ESOL Endorsement (2010).

TSL 3083 - Teaching English Learners (3 Credits )
The course will examine issues of language and culture as relevant for teaching English learners (ELs) in K-12 schools. Students will develop a knowledge base in legislation and programs related to programs for ELs. Students will explore second language acquisition theories, stages of second language development, and linguistic components that will impact students’ performance. In this course, students will improve their cross-cultural understanding and communication to be prepared for meeting the educational needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students appropriately and to increase self-awareness of cultural biases. This course will also cover teaching methods, strategies and curriculum development activities that maximizes language and content learning for ELs. After becoming familiar with assessment for ELs, students will participate in the development of instructional materials and lessons aligned with state and national standards, and language acquisition principles.
TSL 4340 - Methods, Cur, and Instr Effect (3 Credits )
Focuses on instructional methods, strategies, and curriculum design for supporting English language learners (ELLs) in meeting academic standards. Emphasizes planning and delivery of standards-based instruction aligned with the Florida Teacher Standards for ESOL Endorsement (2010).

TSL 4520 - Second Language Acquisition (3 Credits )
Introduces second language acquisition and applied linguistics with emphasis on their implications for classroom instruction and communication. Focuses on instructional adaptations to support English language learners in K–12 settings. This survey course provides an overview of the Florida Teacher Standards for ESOL Endorsement (2010) for teacher education candidates.

TSL 5085 - Methods of Teaching ESOL (3 Credits )
An overview of the theoretical foundations and applications of language instruction approaches, methods, and techniques effective in ESL classrooms, and teaching strategies for diverse learners. Emphasis will be given to making connections between research/theory/principles and best teaching practices and developing a philosophy on effective methods to use when working with English language learners.
TSL 5142 - Curriculum & Material Develop (3 Credits )
Applications of the theories, principles and current research related to second language acquisition, as well as instructional techniques and materials. Program options for second language learners and focus on the development of skills and techniques for assessment, goal setting, teaching methods, and adaptation of materials for the second language learners' varied needs.
TSL 5440 - Testing & Eval for ESOL Teach (3 Credits )
Language assessment issues, opportunities to examine language assessment instruments, and practical experiences developing and using formal and informal assessment measure. Critical analysis, selection, and use of evaluation techniques for measuring ELL/LEP students performance in academic settings.
TSL 5525 - Cross Cult Comm Issues in ESL (3 Credits )
Cultural issues in teaching English as a second language. An in depth discussion of the concept of culture and helps teachers/students recognize its influence on learning, communication, belief systems and values orientations, and patterns of thinking and behaving. The focus is on providing information contributing to cultural competence including applying cross-cultural understanding to planning instructional settings involving culturally and linguistically diverse students.
TSL 6345 - Meth Tchng Content ESOL: 6-12 (3 Credits )
Instructional approaches, methods and techniques effective for secondary content teachers to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students including legal, pedagogical, and curricular issues. Emphasis on best teaching practices.
