Public Hlth Concentration (PHC)

This course is a survey of major topical areas of environmental health. It examines sources, routes, media, and health outcomes associated with biological, chemical and physical agents in the environment. The course introduces students to economic and legal frameworks associated with environmental health issues and public health. In addition, the course covers applications of environmental health including water quality, air quality, food safety, solid and liquid wastes, and occupational health.

Principles, methods, and techniques of epidemiological investigation focusing on both infectious and noninfectious diseases. Emphasis on outbreak investigations, field epidemiology, and epidemiology careers. This course is an epidemiological methods course which builds on epidemiology fundamentals.

This course addresses important infectious diseases and the principles of detection, diagnosis, prevention and control as well as the impact on public health. Students will present information on emerging infectious disease trends in group projects.

This course exposes students to the role of Biostatistics in advancing healthcare and improving health through landmark studies and cases in a wide range of fields, including clinical trials, epidemiology, environmental studies, and healthcare evaluation.

This course offers a biological perspective on public health issues related to chronic and infectious diseases. This course provides an overview of basic biological concepts, molecular biology, and infectious and chronic diseases of public health concern.

This course covers the theory and application of geographic information systems (GIS) for public health and includes an overview of the principles of GIS and its use. The practical component involves the use of desktop GIS software package ARCGIS.

This course examines the public health response to epidemics, natural disasters, environmental emergencies and perpetuated acts of terrorism. The course incorporates an assessment of such events through the lens of disaster and emergency epidemiology.

This practical and research application course allows the student to integrate all of the practical knowledge gained in the core courses and apply that knowledge in a systematic way through an applied research project.

Development of the role of a public health and human services provider in an agency setting.

This course will provide an overview of global health, focusing on the social aspects of disease and the social, economic, political, global, and cultural factors that both cause disease and hinder its management.
