Physician Assistant (PAS)

A study of the process and content of medical interviewing, with emphasis on communication skills, the medical history, and problem-oriented medical record. Practical applications and strong emphasis placed on case presentations. Recognition of the importance of cultural differences in medical education will also be presented.

This is an integrated primary care course, foundational to the principles of human behavior and common psychosocial problems. Presented will be the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and recognition of various diseases and anomalies in the population. Lectures and discussions will provide the student with an understanding of normal and abnormal behavior and appropriate intervention and treatment regimens. Detection and treatment of substance abuse, violence identification and prevention, and management of stress will be covered.

A systemic review and discussion of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management of the most common diseases in humans. Builds upon the foundation of basic science knowledge and clinical assessment skills.

An introduction to various diagnostic imaging and clinical laboratory techniques used in medicine. Focus is on the ability to select, perform, and interpret the results of various imaging and clinical laboratory tests.

The first in a two-course sequence designed to provide students with an overview of skills and procedures needed for clinical practice as a Physician Assistant.

Integration of the definition/description, epidemiology, risk factors, including genetics, as applicable, etiology, signs and symptoms, history physical findings, pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, differential diagnosis, first/second line treatments, management, complications and prognosis patient education and follow-up of disorders in the comprehensive presentation of the various disease processes commonly encountered in primary care.

The fourth in a series of four courses that provides the physician assistant student with a core understanding of the common disease processes encountered in clinical practice. Emphasis is on the recognition, diagnosis, management and prevention of these diseases.

This course provides foundational knowledge in the basic clinical sciences needed throughout the physician assistant curriculum. Emphasis is placed on microbiology and genetics that are utilized in health promotion and management of disease.

The course covers a broad foundation of knowledge regarding the basic components of the health care system and its issues and trends. The course presents and examines the scope and role of the Physician Assistant in medical practice in the delivery of healthcare in the U.S.

This course is designed to give Physician Assistant students an appreciation of the medical ethics as well as the legal implications (theoretical and applied) of practicing where applicable. Lectures will provide students with a basic understanding of the legal and ethical responsibilities of the healthcare practitioner and as individuals.

A clinical rotation in which the students learn basic medical knowledge. The student is exposed to the common medical problems encountered in the in-patient medical service. The emphasis is on the history and physical examination as well as the processes required in the proper work-up and management of a patient. Opportunity is also available for the student to perform the usual unit therapeutic procedures.

A clinical rotation introducing students to patients with behavioral and/or psychiatric medical conditions. The student may rotate with a behavioral medicine hospital or outpatient clinic.

A clinical rotation exposing the student to a variety of clinical problems, routinely seen on the surgical services. Emphasis is placed on pre-operative and post-operative management of the patient. Aseptic technique and operating room principles are emphasized. Management of the surgical patient, both in the operating room and on the unit, are basic to this rotation.

Pediatric rotation designed to introduce the student to the childhood illnesses and normal variations of growth and development. The student is encouraged to seek out third party histories and perform pediatric physical examinations.

Clinical rotation designed to introduce the student to the family medicine practice setting and the interpersonal relationships developed in that setting. The student is exposed to the family medicine practice type patient and other members of the family unit. The student is exposed to the common diseases treated by primary care practitioners and is further exposed to other members of the health care team.

This clinical rotation is designed to introduce the student to women’s health and the management of pregnancy, labor and delivery. The rotation is also designed to introduce the student to the common gynecological problems and management of common female abnormalities. The areas of family planning, pre-, intra- and post-partum care, and routine gynecological care will be covered. Students will be able to identify and manage the medical, emotional, and social well-being of a patient. Students should not expect to directly participate in delivery procedures.

An introduction to the emergency department of area medical centers. Students are exposed to the acutely ill and traumatized patients and learn to take appropriate histories and perform physical examinations on acutely ill patients. Emphasis is placed on management and support measures in situations which are life-threatening.

An introduction to specialized topics across the various specialties and sub-specialties in medicine.
