A study of test and non-test techniques of appraisal with emphasis on the use of test data in counseling programs. Focus will be on integrating data from a variety of sources at individual, small group, and large group levels.

Intended for students in their final year of their master’s program in clinical mental health counseling, this course is designed as an advanced clinical counseling course. Students will learn how to integrate expressive arts and somatic interventions in trauma treatment.

This course will address counseling children and adolescents in school and mental health settings. Students will learn about the effects of contextual, systemic, and individual factors on children and adolescents, about issues frequently addressed in counseling this population, and about a variety of developmentally appropriate counseling interventions, skills, theories, and techniques.

The focus of this course is to help students gain awareness of the ways in which an individuals sense of self, identity, the ways in which they understand others, as well as their conceptions of mental health and well-being are derived from their world-view and prevailing philosophy of life which is shaped by psycho-social and cultural norms and values.

Introduces students to the theory and skills, and the major approaches of family counseling, emphasizing the role of family systems in the maintenance of problem behavior and solutions.

Provides an in-depth exploration of systems theory in family therapy. Major assumptions of systems theory will be examined and the implications for interventions will be explored.

MHS 6446  -  Couple/Relationship Counseling  (3 Credits )  
Participants will learn about evidenced-based couples counseling and how couples counseling is different from other forms of counseling. Students learn about models, techniques, and research related to working with couples.

MHS 6450  -  Issues in Addictions and Abuse  (3 Credits )  
The basis of addictive and abusive behavior in our society from biological, social, cultural, and psychological perspectives for counselors to successfully intervene in the lives of clients impacted by addiction and abuse. Issues pertaining to substances, domestic violence and sexuality will be explored.

MHS 6830  -  CMHC Counseling Internship  (1-6 Credits )  
An intensive field-based experience for candidates in the master’s degree program in clinical mental health counseling. Counseling knowledge and advanced competencies are integrated in a setting under professional supervision. Placements are in a variety of community agency, private practice, school, or college settings. Application for the internship and approval for placement are required prior to registration. 600 hours in the setting are required for the counseling programs. Each credit equates to 100 clock hours of internship.

Examines advanced topics in counseling theory and practice. The specific topic varies. Course may be repeated with different topics. Restricted to students in counseling majors; others by approval.
