Overview of Health and Medical Care as sociocultural phenomena, health behaviors, healthcare organizations, and health services delivery in social and historical context. Students will explore how America developed the world’s finest, most expensive, exceedingly fragmented and highly politicized healthcare system through economic, social, and political perspectives. Introduction to principles of risk management in health services organizations. Focus on activities of health care practitioners to reduce losses associated with clients, employees, property, or potential organizational liability. Special emphasis on federal and state laws and regulatory agencies.
HSA 4591  -  Strategic Mgmt Capstone Sem  (3 Credits )  
This course will be a culminating integrative experience leading to a capstone course in strategic management. The student will utilize knowledge from all health administration courses in a final capstone project.

This course is a 250 hour internship at a long term care facility under the supervision of a qualified Administrator-in-Training preceptor. This is the first half of the 500 hour internship. (Advisor approval needed.)

Overview of the organizational design of well-managed healthcare organizations, with emphasis on organizational relationships, clinical excellence and strategic support. This course explores the use of evidence-based management for effective planning and decision-making by today’s healthcare managers, and focuses on the skills and techniques the health care leader will use to strategically plan and organize the well-managed healthcare organization. Concepts and theories from the general management literature will be identified for dealing with the emerging issues of the health care industry relating to the delivery of effective, patient-centered care.

This course will provide an in-depth analysis of how healthcare is organized and delivered around the world. The course will engage students in a comparative analysis of health indicators in different countries.
HSA 6114  -  Health Care Delivery Systems  (3 Credits )  
The course provides descriptive and analytical view of US healthcare delivery system with special emphasis on quality and cost of care, access to care and patient safety and autonomy. Current status of the US healthcare, as it is undergoing major transformative changes, will be analyzed in the context of historical developments, key characteristics unique to the US healthcare delivery system and comparative assessment of the US healthcare system in relation to other highly industrialized countries.
HSA 6126  -  Health Insurance Managed Care  (3 Credits )  
Introduces the student to the principles, structure and operations of managed care. The aspects of managed care contracting and the organization and delivery of health care services under this type of system are organized and delivered. Issues concerning consumer behavior, rationing, access, cost containment, regulation, competition, ethics regarding managed care and the implications of government sponsored programs including Medicare and Medicaid, value-based care are also addressed.

Focuses on the principles of health economics essential to understanding current trends in the health care field and the development and implementation of health policy. Principles of microeconomic theory, including supply and demand for health care and how it applies to health service delivery are addressed. Emphasis throughout the course is on applying economics to understand the current health care system.

Introduces the student to the fundamentals of financial management and managerial accounting necessary for successful management decision making in health care institutions. Financial management models including managed care, health maintenance organizations, individual choice payment plans including fee for service, Medicare and Medicaid are examined. The principles and application of billing, including use of diagnostic codes is also emphasized. Additional topics include financial accounting and reporting, program auditing, budgeting, analyzing financial statements, utilization review, cost measurement analysis, pricing of health services, and capital investments as related to models of financial management.

The course focuses on the principles and application of traditional and non-traditional techniques of planning, implementing, and managing a new health service organization; the fundamentals of organizational management, and market analysis. Emphasis is placed on conducting market analysis and relating the data to the organization, community, and region. Special focus is placed on understanding the policy and economic challenges that face the president/owner of a new health service organization. This is a directed field experience in a health service organization under the guidance of a community health services administration preceptor. The student gains internship experience in an assigned agency selected by the student and faculty advisor based on the student's background and career interest.
