Introduction to elementary surveying practices such as autolevel, total station, global positioning system (GPS) as well as covering highlights of construction materials, tools, and techniques. In addition geomatics, the study of spatially related data, will be introduced. Instruction will cover the integrated approach of measurement, analysis, and management of the descriptions and locations of Earth-based data. This course is inquiry based and fully integrated with field experience that emphasizes active learning strategies.

Introduction to the basics of geographic information systems, their software and hardware, and their applications in civil and environmental engineering.

CGN 4404  -  Environmental Data Science  (3 Credits )  
This course introduces water and environmental data analysis using Python, a dynamic programming language with powerful libraries for analyzing and visualizing water and environmental data that are essential for tackling real-world water resources and environmental challenges. Data from various sources will be explored, such as NOAA, NASA, Copernicus, USGS, and Data.Gov, handling formats such as CSV, shapefile, and NetCDF. No prior programming experience is required.
CGN 4802  -  Civil Engin Senior Design  (3 Credits )  
Civil Engineering Capstone Design is a cornerstone in engineering education. During this course the students will assimilate the engineering concepts acquired in previous courses into the design of a major civil engineering project, including where appropriate developing alternative solutions, plans and specifications and an oral and written presentation of their final design to their clients. Technical Written Communication.

CGN 5320  -  GIS in Civil and Environmental  (3 Credits )  
Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an increasingly valuable skill across fields such as engineering, environmental science, urban planning, and resource management. This course introduces the core concepts and tools of ArcGIS, focusing on practical applications for environmental and civil engineering. Students will learn spatial data acquisition, geodatabase design, spatial analysis, mapping, and visualization, with exposure to Google Earth, open-source GIS tools, and GPS basics. Case studies illustrate how GIS supports sustainable and data-driven solutions. Graduate students complete additional advanced analytical assignments and a research-oriented project.
