An outline survey of pre-colonial African history including a prefatory introduction to the use of primary sources (such as archaeology, oral tradition, cultural anthropology, comparative linguistics, documents) in reconstructing the African past.
AFH 3200 - African History since 1850 (3 Credits )
Survey of the Colonial and post-colonial history of Africa. Emphasis on the impact of European and other alien influences on the continent, emergence of independent African states, and post-independence problems of nation building and economic development.
AFH 3254 - Gender & Sexuality in Afr His (3 Credits )
This course examines changes and continuities to ideas and practices tied to gender and sexuality in Africa from c. 1850 CE to the present. The course will explore the multiple sources African men and women drew upon to construct and contest identities and sexualities during a period when African states and societies transitioned from independence, to colonial rule, and finally to post-colonial self-determination
AFH 4515 - Migration in African History (3 Credits )
This course argues that more recent manifestation of migration to, from, and within Africa are drawn from previous forms and networks of mobility. The first half of the course focuses on forms of colonial and imperial migration, considering the relationship between the colonial economy, labor, and migration up to independence in the 1960s. In its second half, the course focuses on the history of African migration since independence, and on the history of African communities in the United States.
AFH 6256 - Africa in World History (3 Credits )
Covers Africa's maritime exchanges, economic development, African diaspora, imperialism and decolonization from 1400 to the present. The course concentrates on analyzing large-scale historical changes and themes and processes that linked Africa to the world.
